Fatty’s Bio

Fatty is the visionary behind Fatty’s Tattoos & Piercings. This self taught tattoo artist, painter and musician hails from the DC area and has been tattooing since 1990. Fatty opened Fatty’s Custom Tattooz in Frederick, MD in 1994. Fatty’s Custom Tattooz was soon after relocated to Silver Spring, MD in 1995. Here Fatty’s added body piercing to its services.

In 1997, Fatty was asked to be a speaker for the Maryland Coalition of Professional Tattooists and Body Piercers. Fatty accepted the role with others in representing the industry in front of the state legislator, fighting to keep tattooing and body piercing legal in Maryland.

In late 1998, Fatty’s Custom Tattooz relocated to Dupont Circle in the center of Washington DC, where Fatty has been able to truly realize his tattooing path. Since 2002, Fatty has won over a dozen awards at tattoo conventions in numerous categories, establishing name recognition in the industry.

Fatty has again found himself in the role of an advocate for comprehensive body art regulations by helping to form the DC Coalition of Professional Body Artists. This organization was formed as a response to the unresolved issue of body art regulation and licensing in the district, which continues to this day.

In 2014 Fatty’s celebrated 20 years of body art excellence by adding our 2nd location Fattys H Street Corridor and the name of the shop was changed to Fatty’s Tattoos & Piercings.

In 2015 the Fatty’s empire continued to grow with our expansion of our 3rd location into Silver Spring Maryland.

Fatty enjoys working with people and the stories that their skin will tell. Many of the tattoos you see in his portfolio are done free hand, drawing the designs directly on to the skin with markers, avoiding the use of stencils. He creates the tattoo designs in real time with the client present so that he can get their input, feel their inspiration and help them to discover their own personal mythology. Fatty thrives with this personal approach to tattooing and he feels that he avoids artistic stagnation by the unpredictability of what his clients bring to him. After over a quarter of a century of tattooing, Fatty’s passion for tattooing continues to grow.

Fatty can be found at Fattys Tattoos and Piercings Silver Spring on Sundays, Mondays, and Wednesdays from 1-8 pm. If you would like to contact Fatty, call the shop during operating hours or email him at: fatty@fattystattoos.com
